1770 The English sailors and the navigator James Cook landed at botany bay (actual airport, south syd). He later claimed the entire east coast of Australia for Britain, under the name of New South Wales (NSW)
1788 The first fleet with 1400 convicts, soldiers, administrators and their families arrives at syd cove.
1793 The first free settlers arrive
1813 A route to the farming lands of the west is opened up
1851 Gold is discovered in NSW leading to a huge population boom for Sydney
1925 Syd population exceeds 1 million
1932 The harbour Bridge is opened
1963 The city’s population reaches 2 millions
1973 Queen Elizabeth II opens the Sydney Opera House
1981 The 305m-high Sydney Tower, Australia’s tallest building is completed
1988 Syd celebrates 200 years of European settlements, Darling Harbour opens
1992 the syd harbour Tunnel opens
2000 Syd hosted “the most successful Olympic Games” of the modern era
2005 Syd is now home to more than 4 million people, well over the half of the NSW total population of almost 7 million. People of over 200 nationalities reside in Syd. More than 20 languages are in widespread daily use, but the city’s major languages are English, Chinese (5%) and Arabic (4%).
Geography and climate
*Syd lies at 33°55’ (south), a similar latitude to Buenos Aires and Cape Town and in the northern Hemisphere Los Angeles, Casablanca, Beirut and Osaka.
*The city’s mean summer t° is 23°, and 12° for the winter.
*Temperatures records: 45,3° in 1931, and –4,4° in 1893. The city’s only snow fell on 28june 1836.
*The Syd harbour foreshore extend for 317km.
